At the premiere of “Sunset Boulevard,” Swanson exited the theater and the attending Hollywood stars stood on the sidewalk and applauded her. Barbara Stanwyck darted out of the crowd, tears were streaming down her face as she knelt down, kissed the hem of Swanson’s gown and said, “At your feet where I belong Miss Swanson.”

Like all great artists Stanwyck worshipped talent in others, and when asked how she could do something so totally out of character she said, “I didn’t care, I just had to do it!”
