This was Irving Thalberg’s last project while head of production at MGM. At the time of his death in 1936, the film was in the planning stages, but his widow, Norma Shearer, told Thalberg this was a part of a lifetime and stuck with it to its completion in 1938.
At the premiere Shearer received spontaneous applause for several scenes. It was her night of triumph, but she made sure that the name Irving Thalberg was spoken numerous times including signing the guestbook Norma Shearer Thalberg.
